Mittal Steel Selects GlobalEnglish to Assist With Global Communication Skills

September 6, 2006 — GlobalEnglish Corporation, the leading online English learning and support service provider for business communication, today announced that Mittal Steel, the world's largest and most global steel company, has signed a multiyear contract, valued in excess of $1 million. Mittal Steel will deploy the GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning ServiceTM to thousands of employees around the world in an effort to improve communication across business units and enable local talent to pursue international careers, particularly among the top three levels of management.

A recent letter from senior management to employees worldwide said, "Mittal Steel is becoming more and more global and our business has long ago evolved from being local to being global. We need, therefore, a common language to help drive the business forward. In our quest to become the world's most admired steel institution, many things need to be improved. A priority is the fluent command of English, the official language of our company."

Although the steel industry has historically operated locally or nationally, Mittal's new global entity is changing the way business is done. It has quickly become the largest steel company in the world through trans-national acquisitions, and Mittal employees increasingly feel the need to improve their English skills in order to communicate with people from around the world.

"Mittal Steel is revolutionizing its industry by taking steel production to a global level," said Deepak Desai, President and CEO of GlobalEnglish Corporation. "With improved English communication skills among its 250,000 employees, Mittal can accelerate global integration, improve efficiencies, and increase employee mobility in order to share best practices around the world."

"Before selecting a vendor we conducted a pilot to compare services, and the users told us that they found the GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning Service to be the more intuitive system," said Alex Gardella, a Human Resources Manager for Mittal Steel. "Most importantly, we achieved results. People's skills improved just during the pilot period."

The GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning Service is one of the fundamental programs provided by the Mittal University. Its catalog offers a comprehensive set of blended learning tools, including classroom-based training, online courses, external events, and technical instruction, all designed to enable employees to better adapt to changes in the business. Employees can access the resources provided by the Mittal University on their own time, at their own pace.
