SDG international plc Selects GlobalEnglish to Provide Online English Training for Its International Executives
April 18, 2006 — DSG international plc, Europe's leading electrical retailer, and GlobalEnglish Corporation, the leading online English learning and support service provider for business communication, have signed a multi-year agreement that will see GlobalEnglish® provide English language training to an initial group of over 300 international employees across Europe. DSG international selected the GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning ServiceTM to teach English -- its official business language -- and ensure that communication in and out of its UK-based retail support centre is clear.
DSG international plc is Europe's leading electrical retailing group. The Group trades through 1,400 stores and online stores, spanning 15 countries and employing 40,000 people. More than 100 million customers shop in-store and online with the Group every year. The Group's retail and e-tail brands include PC World, Currys and Dixons in the UK and Ireland, The Link in the UK, Elkjøp in the Nordic countries, UniEuro in Italy, Kotsovolos in Greece, Electro World in central Europe, and PC City in four European countries. The Group operates a multi-channel approach to electrical retailing and offers customers a comprehensive range of after-sales services. It also runs a multi-brand business-to-business operation in the UK.
John Clare, group chief executive, said, "DSG international is a truly international retail operation... Approaching one-third of our sales are generated in stores outside of the UK, and we have plans for further growth in all the countries where we now have a presence."
English language skills are critical for the success of the expansion effort, according to group human resources director Ben Bengougam. "English is our chosen business language, and by developing their English skills our employees can move effectively from country to country and operate in different environments. This dramatically improves our ability to integrate employees within our international management structure and improve operational effectiveness in new markets."
The GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning Service uses an online platform, which means that employees can access the service from any PC with an Internet connection, worldwide. "The convenience and utility of the service were both important criteria for us when selecting a supplier," adds Bengougam. "Our international managers are by definition highly mobile and this service works without the need for hefty textbooks or classes in a specific location."
"In the second half of 2005, DSG international experienced 24% sales growth in its international operations. In order to sustain this growth, the company must efficiently manage new brands and train new employees, most of whom must have the ability to communicate in a common language," said Deepak Desai, president and CEO of GlobalEnglish Corporation. "I believe that DSG international will be successful in its ambitious plans for growth because it is making an incisive investment in its employees to ensure clear communication across its operations in Europe."
