GlobalEnglish Corporation and Contra Costa Announce World's First College Credit program for Online English Language Study

South San Francisco, CA, February 5, 2001 — Innovative e-learning program will enable students from around the globe to learn English and earn U.S. college credit, all via the Internet

GlobalEnglish Corporation, the leading online English language learning service, and Contra Costa College today announced plans to offer college credit for the courses in English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) available at GlobalEnglish.comTM. Located near San Francisco, Contra Costa College is a fully accredited college with a leading reputation and long history in providing effective ESL/EFL instruction to students from around the world. The GlobalEnglish/Contra Costa College partnership represents the world's first college credit program for online English language study, enabling students from around the globe to learn English and earn up to 11 units of U.S. college credit, all via the Internet.

The GlobalEnglish.com coursework is state of the art and is designed to leverage the unique capabilities of the Internet as a platform for learning and teaching. All of the courses were developed by the GlobalEnglish team of English language experts, who have combined experience teaching in 15 different countries. Contra Costa College reviewed the courses to ensure that they met the college's criteria for credit offerings. GlobalEnglish.com currently offers general English and Business English courses, from beginner to advanced, with approximately 700 hours of engaging assignments and activities.

"The Internet is the next great opportunity in distance learning," said McKinley Williams, Dean of the College. "We're proud to be partnering with a leader and innovator in the field and to be the first college in the country to offer full credit for online ESL/EFL study."

Founded in 1949, Contra Costa College serves a broad community of students. Over the years, the college has hosted students from many countries around the world. Today, the college's international student population includes non-native English speakers from Japan, Korea, China, Mexico, Central and South America, several European and African countries and Southeast Asia. To support the special learning needs of these students, the college offers a series of English for international students (EIS) courses.

"Contra Costa College has an impressive history of providing outstanding English language instruction to a diverse group of non-native speakers," said Helen Kalkstein Fragiadakis, Chairperson, English for International Students at the college and best-selling author of the All Clear! textbook series (Heinle & Heinle). "With the GlobalEnglish partnership, we can now extend our fine range of courses and services to learners worldwide. We're impressed with the capability of the GlobalEnglish.com courses to help students develop their listening and speaking skills--the most critical, and difficult, language learning skills to build," she added.

The partnership with Contra Costa College is the first of many higher-education alliances GlobalEnglish expects to develop in the near future. "As e-learning continues to gain acceptance in colleges and universities across the country and around the world, we plan to forge similar partnerships, with Contra Costa College and GlobalEnglish.com serving as the model for offering online ESL/EFL college credit," said Dr. Martin Rice, GlobalEnglish co-founder and vice president of education strategy.
