GlobalEnglish Adds CEOs with Extensive Experience in Educational Technology and Market Expansion to Its Board
William Dinsmore and Ron Hoge Bring 50 Years of Combined Industry Experience to Leading Online English Language Learning Company
South San Francisco, CA, January 8, 2002 — GlobalEnglish Corporation, the leading online English language learning service for corporations and consumers, today announced it has appointed two new members to its board of directors. William Dinsmore, 54, and Ron Hoge, 55, have joined the company’s board, bringing more than 50 years of combined relevant industry and management experience. As members of the GlobalEnglish board, Mr. Dinsmore and Mr. Hoge will advise the company’s executive team on strategies for managing and expanding its premier online English language service. The two join existing GlobalEnglish board members Reece Duca, managing partner of The Investment Group of Santa Barbara; Wendell VanAuken, partner of Mayfield Fund; and Fred Grainger, president and CEO of GlobalEnglish.
“With the addition of Bill and Ron, our board of directors is now among the best in the industry,” said Mr. Grainger. “As we embark on the next phase of growth, our board of directors will play a pivotal role in guiding the GlobalEnglish executive team into new markets and business opportunities. Bill’s ten years of experience building The Learning Company into the quality leader in educational software is invaluable to GlobalEnglish. His presence on our board means that we have direct access to a seasoned executive who is knowledgeable about creating and marketing educational products and services. Ron, with his vast experience as a CEO of large public and international companies, will help steer us into new global markets where English language instruction and services are in high demand.”
From 1985 to 1995, Mr. Dinsmore was CEO of The Learning Company, the leading developer of educational software in the U.S. Following the takeover of The Learning Company by SoftKey International in December 1995, Mr. Dinsmore became a private investor and advisor to qualitydriven companies in the education, Internet and consumer product industries. He began his career as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and has held management positions with both public and private companies. Mr. Dinsmore earned an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he currently serves on the Board of Trustees. He has been an investor and advisor to GlobalEnglish since the company’s founding.
“The global market for a high-quality online service that teaches English effectively is huge," said Mr. Dinsmore. “GlobalEnglish Corporation’s exclusive focus on this growing market, and its extraordinary team of educational technologists and managers, makes it one of the most promising companies in the Internet arena in the coming decade. It is a privilege to be associated with such a professional group.”
Ron Hoge is president and chief operating officer at CenterBeam, a complete IT infrastructure company for small- and medium-sized businesses. With more than 30 years of experience in both U.S. and international business, Mr. Hoge manages CenterBeam’s growth and oversees daily operations as the company launches its IT service into major metropolitan centers around the world. Before joining CenterBeam, Mr. Hoge was president and CEO of MagneTek, Inc., a $1.2 billion electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer. Prior to MagneTek, Mr. Hoge was president of the aerospace and equipment systems division at Allied Signal, Inc., where he successfully consolidated five business units and increased the company’s net income by 30 percent. Earlier in his career, Mr. Hoge served as president and CEO of the Onan Corporation, a $600 million leader in power generation equipment. He also was president of Cummins Brasil S.A., a subsidiary of Cummins Engine Company. Mr. Hoge holds a B.A. in mathematics from Amherst College and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
“As a new member of the board, I am excited about applying my international experience to help GlobalEnglish further develop its worldwide business strategy,” said Hoge. “I look forward to working closely with the management team as the company expands its online English language learning service to additional markets around the world.”
