GlobalEnglish™ First to Address Complete English Language Needs

State-of-the Art Support Tools Enable Users to Practice Skills and Interact Online With GlobalEnglish E-TeacherTM

South San Francisco, CA, November 20, 2000 — GlobalEnglish Corporation today announced the addition of two new general English language courses and hosted voice chat on GlobalEnglish.comTM, the Leading Solution for Learning English OnlineTM. The new Basic Course and advanced General English Course 6 broaden the scope of the GlobalEnglish.com curriculum to accommodate all levels of English language learners—from novice to advanced. With these two new courses, GlobalEnglish offers users the most comprehensive online English language service, providing more than 700 hours of online coursework. The new hosted voice chat feature allows users to communicate directly with a GlobalEnglish E-TeacherTM and practice the speaking and listening skills they acquire.

GlobalEnglish offers English language courses for both consumers and corporations. The series of General English courses is designed for users who want to improve their English language skills for personal, professional or academic purposes. “More than one billion people worldwide are currently studying English,” said Fred Grainger, president and CEO of GlobalEnglish. “Our new courses, with 100 additional hours of online instruction, were designed to reach the broadest possible spectrum of these users, enabling them to learn English no matter what their current skill level.”

Users can sample a free assignment from the new Basic Course or General English Course 6 at www.GlobalEnglish.com. Each assignment includes engaging activities that build listening, speaking and reading comprehension skills. Each assignment engages and motivates the user to learn with appealing presentations of specific linguistic forms (grammatical forms, functional language, vocabulary) through sound, Macromedia FlashTM movies, slide shows and graphics, followed by practice of these forms and production of the language.”

Basic English Course Offers State-of-the-Art Instruction for Beginning Learners

The new Basic Course is designed for users who have no English language experience and focuses on the development of effective speaking and listening skills. Users will learn how to greet people, introduce themselves in social and business situations, as well as read and order a meal from a menu. At the very basic level, users will learn important fundamentals, including the alphabet and numbers from 1-100 so they can understand dates and times.

“Our goal is to address a user’s lifelong English language learning needs,” said Dr. Martin Rice, GlobalEnglish co-founder and vice president of education strategy. “Learning a new language can be a daunting task, so we created a basic course that is designed specifically for users with no English language experience. For example, by incorporating multimedia Flash technology into our assignments, we can take advantage of visual methodologies that are widely acknowledged as the best way to teach a true beginner.”

General English Course 6 Teaches Users to Communicate in Real-World Situations

GlobalEnglish General English Course 6 focuses on useful language to help the advanced user communicate more fluently in a variety of challenging situations. “The new advanced course will help users with a solid grasp of the English language expand their skills to the highest level of communication,” added Dr. Rice. “General English Course 6 concentrates on providing learners the advanced skills and strategies they need to communicate in even the most difficult situations. For example, in an assignment on cross-cultural communication, users learn about greeting, eating, and gift-giving customs from around the world. The insights users gather will help them interact appropriately and effectively with people from other cultures, ensuring they will not commit an embarrassing faux pas.”

Hosted Voice Chat Allows Users to Practice Speaking and Listening Skills

GlobalEnglish.com now offers hosted voice chat, which gives users the opportunity to talk with other learners and with an E-Teacher. Using Live VoiceTM, the real-time Internet voice service from Lipstream Networks, GlobalEnglish provides learners with a place to practice the core skills of speaking and listening. This service is available in the GlobalEnglish Community, a popular area on the site where users develop and practice their communications skills.

“As users learn English, the most critical skills they need are speaking and listening,” added Dr. Rice. “By providing hosted voice chat we enable users to enjoy the power of the Internet without sacrificing the important aspects of classroom learning—live interaction with other students and a teacher.”

Coursework Developed by Language Experts

The GlobalEnglish course curriculum is based on the communicative language teaching approach (CLT) and is designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the Internet as a platform for learning. The two new courses were developed by the GlobalEnglish team of English language experts, who have combined experience teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) in 15 countries. In addition, the GlobalEnglish Advisory Board provided instructional direction and consultation during the materials creation process. The Board features an impressive roster of luminaries in the ESL/EFL field, including David Nunan, Mary Ann Christison, Linda Grant and Joy Reid.
